People live behind cinder-block walls here in Orange County. You have your major thoroughfares, the ubiquitous mini malls, then behind perfunctory semi-tall walls are the houses. Around 3pm, you see high school kids hop, skip, smoke, bike to wherever they darn well please. Behind the walls, in their big old suburban houses, might it be possible that they are talking about important things like the upcoming presidential debates, or that ongoing war in Iraq, or, rather, things we pompously declare trivial?
It is said that a community has a "collective psyche". What is it in the case of Orange County? I have yet to find out.
Then an email from an old friend, and a mystery is solved.
