Payphone

Woman, tall, blonde, talking on a lone payphone. As I entered the library, I barely noticed her. 30 minutes later, I walked out of the library, the same woman was still talking on the same payphone, her expression complacent and joyous. She was wearing pink nylon pants, her legs so thin that the pants flapped in the wind. I got into my car and did a double take -- carrying on a long conversation at a payphone in this age of cellphone and Internet? Who was she talking to? Someone she would rather not have a record of on her phone bills? A secret confidante? A lover? Cynical me. Maybe she is an election campaign worker, trying to convert an undecided voter. Maybe not.
