I'm reading Alice Munro's "The Moons of Jupiter". Her prose pulls me into those pages, and the stories compel me to stick around. Novelists are a lot like street performers -- the good ones turn one's head, but only the best keep one from leaving. No one is crying that there is a shortage of decent writing, but "decent writing" is often not enough to elevate. What does a reader yearn for when she picks up a book? Does she know? Does anyone know? Do we trust those who claim to know?
