Britney Spears and Shakespeare
To my amazement, I found out that there is a literary equivalent of American Idol TV show in Britain called, appropriately enough, "LitIdol". Aspiring writers are asked to submit 10,000 words of the opening chapter of an unpublished work, from which a panel of judges will select the worthy ones, and in a climatic finale, the eager novelists will read their writing to a live TV audience, resulting in the crowning of a "Literary Idol".
Can a LitIdol TV show ever take off in the States? Imagine thousands of literature-loving American youngsters screaming their adoration for the keyboard-pounding literati.... Yeah, right. How anyone can put glamour in writing fiction is beyond me. Let's face it, most writers are anti-social geeks, and almost all good writers resent boisterous occasions that have nothing to do with the quiet, inner world they prefer.
In the birthplace of Shakespeare maybe, but definitely not in the birthplace of Britney Spears.
